Assistant Technical Director

Summary:

The Assistant Technical Director, under the supervision of the Technical Director, will provide support for the Production Department including, but not limited to:  drafting, coordinating bids, rentals and logistics, and assisting with the paperwork, planning, implementation and archiving of all company productions.  The ATD will serve as the primary technical representative and Lighting Designer for all Academy productions and tours.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned;

·       Assist TD & LD with the drafting of ground plans, sections and lighting plots using Vectorworks
·       Generate & distribute multiple viewports of drawings for Stage Management
·       Create 3D drawings of scenery & ground plans
·       Create custom texture renderings using Renderworks
·       Supervise the IATSE crew in the absence of the TD at the theater and warehouse
·       Assist with the supervision and oversight of all Load-In and Load-out activities at the theater
·       Assist the TD & LD with generating & distribution of technical paperwork for each production
·       Assist the TD & LD with archiving each production
·       Assist the TD with all trucking and routing logistics
·       Assist the SM’s with procurement or fabrication of rehearsal props
·       Attend all Technical Rehearsals, Dress Rehearsals and Performances (as assigned)
·       Take archival scenic and lighting look photographs during final dress rehearsals
·       Coordinate shop bids and rentals for Houston Ballet.  Order & procure expendables
·       Lighting Designer (consistent with the company light plot) and Technical Director for Academy         performances in the Dance Lab and on tour
·       Work with Stage Management to develop and maintain lighting paperwork and tech riders for Academy touring
·       Work with the PA to Maintain Lighting, Audio & Video systems in the Dance Lab
·       Maintain Dance Lab light plot
·       Work with the PA to set-up and strike the Dance Lab for Houston Ballet events, meetings and rentals, as needed
·       As needed, drive a box truck of up to 26’ in length
·       Conduct backstage tours for donors and other VIP’s, as needed

Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s Degree in theater technology or lighting design required; or equivalent professional                             technical theater experience
·       Advanced proficiency with current release of Vectorworks, 3D Drafting, Renderworks, Spotlight  and                  Lightwright
·       Experience and familiarity with ETC Lighting Consoles
·       Experience as a Lighting Designer and familiarity with lighting equipment
·       Basic working knowledge of Audio / Visual systems
·       Basic Carpentry and Rigging skills
·       Familiarity with IATSE contracts and work rules
·       Valid Driver’s License
·       Strong work ethic and stamina
·       Detail-oriented with excellent problem solving skills
·       Great communicator and an active listener
·       Ability to work as a team member and collaborate with others who may have skillsets or experience                   below or above your own
·       Proficient personal computer skills including:  Microsoft Suite (Office 365), Q-Lab, record keeping,                       routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, etc.

 Physical Demands:

·       Bending legs downward and forward by bending leg and spine, kneeling
·       Ascending or descending stairs, ramps and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms
·       Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances
·       Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion
·       Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
·       Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
·       Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
·       Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects
·       Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily                                       technical/administrative nature
·       Manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers

 Work Environment:

·       Well-lighted, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation, and;  dark-            lighted, indoor theatrical setting with adequate ventilation, and; well-lighted, non HVAC controlled                    warehouse setting
·       Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic), and;  Loud noise             (examples: saws, drills, vacuums, white noise, orchestral & recorded music)
·       Regular work hours (approximate):  Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
·       Irregular work hours:  This position will at times be required to work outside the regular work hours,                 with significant nights and weekends
